GPA score computation

GPA = ∑ (module credit units X module grade point)
∑ (module credit units)

module grade........grade point
DIST................................4.0
A (>=80).........................4.0
B+ (75 to <80)................3.5
B (70 to <75)...................3.0
C+ (65 to <70).................2.5
C (60 to <65)...................2.0
D+ (55 to <60).................1.5
D (50 to <55)...................1.0
D- (Subsidiary Pass).......0.5
P (Non-Graded Pass).....0.5
F (Fail)..............................0.0

EXAMPLE
module....credit unit......grade obtained
IT1101....4.0..................D (=1.0)
IT1102....4.0..................A (=4.0)
IT1103....4.0..................C (=2.0)
IT1104....4.0..................B+ (=3.5)
IT1105....5.0..................A (=4.0)

GPA = (4.0*1.0 + 4.0*4.0 + 4.0*2.0 + 4.0*3.5 + 5.0*4.0)/(4.0+4.0+4.0+4.0+5.0)
= 2.9524

What university course would you be eligible for?

You might think that it is too early for you to know about university admission, since you are only in year 1. But, it is important to know now, so that you can plan for it. By the time you reach year 3, it will be too late to plan.

And to clear some misconceptions:

Misconception 1: SBM students will have advantage in uni business course admission
For business courses in university, students from SBM will NOT have any advantage over you, in terms of course admission. Business courses in local university have no module exemptions for all poly diplomas. Refer to the links below to find out what university courses you can go to:

NUS: http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/apply/catb/require.htm#Nanyang_Polytechnic
NTU: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/admissions/SingaporeStudents/catb_criteria.htm#Nanyang
NTU score computation: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/admissions/SingaporeStudents/catb.htm

Misconception 2: DBI course is half way here, half way there
NOT true. These days, a business can hardly cope without IT. Skilled with IT knowledge, you would be able to perform a task better when you go out to work, compared to someone with only business knowledge.

Start thinking about what you want to do now, and work towards your goals!

New Year, New Hope! Happy 2008!!!

Seems like a thick layer of dust has gathered on this blogsite!
Time flies... It's 2008! Happy 2008 to all!

There can't be a better time to do a checkpoint on the past semester, and what should be done for the coming semesters. So let me take this opportunity to share with you what I know, and what I think you need to do.

______________________________________________
If you want to go to University...
In the first semester, you guys knew that to get into NTU/NUS/SMU, you would need a GPA of around 3.5 or more. And you guys have the first feel of what poly exams are like. If you are some way off GPA 3.5, it's ok, because you still have 5 more semesters to work towards it. But this semester will be VERY important, if you intend to go to NTU/NUS/SMU.
So, try your best!

------------------------------------------------------------------
But what if you try your very best, and you still can't get into NTU/NUS/SMU?
If this is the case, don't despair, there are a few options for you:

(1) Work for a few years first (to save money), and then continue your full-time study at an ESTABLISHED private university or overseas university. For local private universities, you should find out which are the more established private universities that are widely recognised by the industry.

(2) Work and at the same time, study part-time, again at AN ESTABLISHED private university.

However, you do have to note that private/overseas university tend to be more expensive.
Example
Singapore citizen @ NUS Business faculty in 2008 = S$6,110/per year
(https://team.nus.edu.sg/registrar/info/ug/UGTuition2007-8.pdf)

Singapore citizen @ SIM Business degree in 2008 ~ S$7400/per year
(http://www.unisim.edu.sg/uni/pub/gen/uni_pub_gen_content.cfm?mnuid=23)

------------------------------------------------------------------
Other than your studies, it may also help in your university admission if you achieve certain awards. One of the more prestigous awards is the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA).
I understand that this award is widely recognised both locally and worldwide, and it can really help in university admission. And you don't have to be a genius to achieve this award. The purpose of this award is to develop and maximise the potential of young people through selfless community service, challenges of adventure, skills development and physical recreation so that they may be exceptional individuals who can contribute effectively to society and the nation.

You can, for example, document about something that interests you (e.g. cooking, community services), and how you go about excelling in this interest.

For more details, go to http://www.nyaa.org/. I would strongly encourage you to give it a shot!

For those who are not too keen to go to University...
Personally, I believe that going to University can give you a bit of an advantage in your future endeavours, but it does not guarantee success. Bill Gates, for example, did not graduate from University (but do note that he is very smart and he has to put in ALOT of effort for his success).

For those of you who are not too keen to go to University, you need to make an informed choice. In other words, you need to know the difference between going to University and not going (in terms of career, salary, etc). If you decide to give University a miss (at least for now) to maybe start a business, then you have to understand that you have to work REALLY REALLY hard for your business.

If you decide to give University a miss and just to bum around, I would really advise you to give it a second thought.

Do talk to your seniors, other lecturers or me to find out more...

In life, a positive attitude is very important. When you are down and out, don't despair.
